Sperm Freezing

Sperm Freezing:

Sperm freezing, also known as sperm banking or cryopreservation, is a valuable way to preserve your fertility for future family planning. Think of it as pressing the "pause" button on your ability to have children. By storing sperm at an ultra-low temperature of -196°C in liquid nitrogen, you ensure that your sperm remains viable and ready for use whenever you need it—whether that’s months or years later.

When Should You Consider Sperm Freezing?

There are several situations where sperm freezing might be a good option for you:

  • Undergoing Medical Treatments: If you're starting treatments like chemotherapy or radiation therapy that may impact your fertility.
  • Planning for a Vasectomy: If you're considering a vasectomy but want to preserve the option to have children in the future.
  • Declining Sperm Quality: If you're noticing a decrease in sperm count or quality, freezing sperm can help preserve your fertility.
  • Difficulties Providing Samples: If you have difficulty providing a sperm sample during fertility treatments, sperm freezing ensures you have sperm available when needed.
  • High-Risk Occupations: If your job puts you at risk (e.g., military service or deployment), sperm freezing allows you to safeguard your reproductive future.

What Happens During the Sperm Freezing Process?

The sperm freezing process involves several important steps to ensure the health and safety of your sperm:

  • Health Screening: Before storing your sperm, we conduct thorough health checks, including testing for viruses such as HIV and hepatitis. This ensures the sperm is stored safely, similar to how blood banks screen their donations.
  • Paperwork and Legal Decisions: There are important legal decisions to consider, including:
    • What happens to your sperm if you can no longer make decisions?
    • Can your partner access the sperm if something happens to you?
    • Would you allow your sperm to be used for research or donated to help others?
    • How long would you like to store the sperm? While standard storage lasts for 10 years, you have the option to extend storage up to 55 years if needed.
  • Sample Testing: Before storage, a small sample of your sperm is tested by an andrologist (fertility specialist) to ensure the sperm is healthy and suitable for future use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Think of it as a backup plan. It's helpful if you're starting cancer treatment, having vasectomy, or trying IVF. Some men freeze sperm before starting a job with fertility risks, or just for peace of mind.

Sperm can stay frozen for many years without losing quality. Once frozen, it's like pressing a pause button - the sperm stays just as healthy as the day we froze it. We've used sperm frozen for over 20 years with good results.

We make it as private as possible. You'll have a clean, private room, and our staff is professional. Many men are nervous at first but find it's much easier than they expected.

Some sperm cells naturally don't survive freezing, but we freeze extra to make up for this. The sperm that do survive are just as healthy and capable of creating a baby as fresh sperm.

Usually, we recommend 2-3 samples, given a few days apart. This gives you enough backup for several IVF tries or other fertility treatments. If you're having medical treatment, we might suggest storing more.
